FAQs

Is there a paper map of the SCAR?

  • No. The SCAR occasionally morphs to accomodate permanent road closures and other issues. The digital map is easily updated...it is also free, which is in-line with the grassroots nature of the SCAR.

Can jeeps/trucks use the SCAR?

  • Yes, as long as they are street-legal. The SCAR is routed on public and national/state forest roads. Some sections may require four-wheel drive and/or may be impassable at any given time due to road conditions.

Can side-by-sides (SXSs) use the SCAR?

  • Vehicles using the SCAR must be street-legal in SC. The SC legislature is considering a bill to allow SXSs on public roads, but the bill has not yet been voted on or signed.

What is the distance...?

  • Distances of various route segments are listed in the User Guide page on this site.

How much of the SCAR is paved vs. unpaved?

  • Miles: About 55% of the SCAR is paved and 45% of the SCAR is unpaved.

  • Time: About 40% of your trip time will be on paved roads and 60% of your trip time will be on unpaved roads (this is an approximation).

What's the best place to jump onto the SCAR? I am coming from <insert your town here>?

  • The SCAR uses public roads to make a loop, with no real start/finish. So, you can jump onto the SCAR wherever it's most convenient. The interactive map on this site is a great tool for determining what works best for you.

Where can I camp or find lodging?
